Wet sanding, often referred to as watersanding, or colors sanding, is an autobody paint correction technique used to remove surface flaws like large flaws such as orange peel, dust in clearcoat, deep scratches, heavy water spots, failed ceramic coatings, and other significant defects. This method involves the careful sanding away of a thin layer of the clear coat, promoting a fully leveled surface. As part of the wet sanding process, the surface is polished with a 3-stage process.
It is no secret that wetsanding is often the key to a show level, or factory level paint job. A great wetsanding job can turn what appears to be a sloppy, unprofessional, contaminated paint job into something truly special. There is a reason why all top body shops have a large section of their facility dedicated to wet sanding, and polishing vehicles. New paint, rarely means perfect paint.
The Wet Sanding Process
Wet sanding employs fine-grit sandpaper, which can range from grits as low as 600, all the way up to 8000. The water serves as a lubricant between the paint surface and paper, and "flushes" clearcoat from the paper as sanding continues. This process is commonly used after repaint work is done at a body shop. Normally, body shop repaints always have some form of excessive orange peel or dust in clearcoat. This is true from the factory your vehicle was made, as well as your local family owned body shop.
Benefits of Wet Sanding
Improved Paint Clarity: Wetsanding can provide a mirror like finish, as it eliminates micro highs and lows in a paint surface. Naturally, it can totally eliminate deep defects that a normal paint correction can not, further improving clarity. A wetsanded vehicle can in fact look better than new.
Preparation for Protective Coatings: Wet sanding creates a smooth surface, making it easier for subsequent applications of protective coatings or films, such as ceramic coatings and PPF, to adhere effectively and last longer.
