Paint protection film can be a complicated task. After our many years in the business, we have encountered several "boundaries" to PPF installations. These are factors that can cause complications during or after a ppf install. Being able to properly identify what causes hiccups is important.
The condition of your vehicle’s paint is the most critical factor in determining the success of a PPF installation. Contrary to popular belief, PPF does not hide imperfections—it can actually highlight existing damage like scratches, swirl marks, or chips. PPF is a protective measure, not a restorative one, so it’s essential to address paint defects before installation.
Many clients upgrade from ceramic coatings to PPF for enhanced protection. However, ceramic coatings can complicate the PPF installation process.
Used vehicles often have panels that have been repainted, and the quality of this work can vary significantly.
Extreme conditions such as temperatures above 35*c, and below -20*c have been known to cause issues with PPF adhesion. Though uncommon, certain brands of film are more prone to this "temperature shock" which can cause premature lifting. This lifting is usually very minor, and easily remedied.
Extreme snow and sleet can also pose a challenge when attempting to keep your PPF install in perfect condition. Minor lifting can happen when driving in snow that is at the level of your bumper. In most scenarios, this issue is easily remedied and covered by our warranty scope.
At Toronto Buffing , we pride ourself on extending all possible edges. In certain scenerios, we attempt to get maximum coverage by aligning film very close to seperate panels. For example, we may unclip a bumper, to wrap the PPF into the fender more securely. Such level of deep wrapping is not without risks. Each body panel on vehicles vibrate and create friction ever so slightly. This friction can sometimes be enough to overcome the bond created by the film, resulting in a lift. In these scenarios, we normally can trim back the film to the level it would be at in standard installations. Sometimes, when you push the boundaries, the boundaries push back.
Rust proofing is a common practice to protect vehicles from corrosion, but it can interfere with PPF installation.
A high-quality PPF installation takes time, and rushing the process can compromise the results.
