A common question we receive at our Vaughan location is what is the difference between ceramic coatings, and ppf (paint protection film. In this section we will explain the difference clearly, as well as the pro's and con's of each service.
A ceramic coating is a liquid chemical combination of solvents and silica. There are other components to this liquid such as resins, additives, and agents, but for simplicity sake, these are the two main key components to a coating. Ceramic coating products are sold in bottles of 50ML-100ML, and applies with a foam applicator pad. Quality ceramic coatings can last anywhere from 4 years to 15 years. There are various types of ceramic coatings for different substrates, such as wheels, glass, exhaust tips, and calipers.
When installed, a ceramic coating provides a thin microscopic layer of protection that can resist harsh conditions. Ceramic coating improves the surface hardness of a finish, making the accumulation of defects less when compared to unprotected paint. We like to think of this layer which is normally 1-2 microns thick, as a sacrificial layer that can take the abuse from the elements, while keeping the original paint surface intact. Ceramic coatings are only installed after paint correction. Ceramic coating also provides exceptional gloss, and enhancement to a finish due to its composition. Finally, a ceramic coating offers hydrophobic properties, which repels water and improves ease of maintenance.
Paint protection film is a clear plastic material that is applied to a vehicles finish. It is composed of specially formulated urethane, with an adhesive "glue" backing. Some paint protection films have a topcoat, similar to ceramic coating, built in to the material to assist with longevity. High end films also have a self healing aspect to them, meaning light scratches can "reflow" themselves and disappear. Paint protection film is installed with water, soap, and specialty tools such as squeegees. Paint protection film is normally warranted for 10 years by manufactures. Paint protection film installation can take up to 2 weeks for larger packages, and full vehicle coverage of PPF can cost over $8000. Paint protection film is normally sold in rolls, similar to seran wrap!
Paint protection film is though as the best protection on the market. Paint protection film provides about 7 to 8 mils of addition material on a vehicle's finish. It can protect against scratches, rock chips, and even light collision damage. Paint protection film can add gloss to a finish, however it can amplify damage that is not repaired prior to it's application. Paint protection film is installed after paint correction. It is exceptionally easy to maintain, and very forgiving.
-Both products are used for protecting a vehicles finish
-Both products offer a "sacrificial layer"
-Both products are used after a paint correction process
-Ceramic coating is a liquid, where as paint protection film is a solid clear plastic film.
-Ceramic coating is applied with a foam applicator, where as PPF is applied by laying the material over the finish, in combination with soap, water, and specialty tools.
-Ceramic coatings are not designed to protect against things such as rock chips, and more moderate damage, where as paint protection film is.
-Paint protection film is notably thicker than a ceramic coating (7-8 mil vs 1-2 microns for coating)
-Ceramic coatings increase the surface hardness, where as ppf becomes the new surface.
-Ceramic coatings are significantly less expensive, normally costing around $1600 for a full package, where as Paint Protection FIlm in Toronto can cost anywhere from $8000-$12000.
This question is highly subjective. in a perfect world, if your budget allows, paint protection film is the ultimate protection. However, this service can only be done on vehicles that are at the highest caliber. Paint protection film has little forgiveness for defects, where as ceramic coating does. Ceramic coating is a good option for those with a modest budget, looking to protect a vehicle after a paint correction. If your vehicle is new, or a complex colour, paint protection film on the front end is highly recommended.
