A good PPF installation starts with meticulous surface preparation. At Toronto Buffing, we begin by thoroughly washing and decontaminating the paint to remove dirt, grease, and debris. This is done with a combination of chemicals, and specialized clay bars. This step is crucial to not only remove contamination, but any potential waxes on the surface that might hinder the installation. This is followed by paint correction to eliminate swirls, scratches, and imperfections. Arguably, proper paint correction, with quality products free of silicones, is the most important stage in preparing a vehicle for PPF. New vehicles often have residue remnants from the factory protective liner, that simply can not be removed with standard washes alone. Used vehicles can have an array of hard contamination, which normally needs some form of aggressive polishing to remove. Skipping this stage can amplify any contamination when paint protection film is installed. A more thorough paint correction is also crucial on vehicles that may have a ceramic coating previously installed. Applying PPF over a flawless, sanitary, smooth surface ensures optimal adhesion and a mirror-like finish.
2.B Disassembling the Vehicle
Disassembling certain parts of the vehicle, such as door handles, emblems, and trim pieces, is essential for a professional-grade PPF installation. This allows the film to be tucked underneath edges, ensuring complete coverage. Equally important, it allows ppf technicians the opportunity to clean dirt from behind trim pieces, which normally would end up inside PPF. Who disassembles the vehicle is also a key factor. We have professional autobody technicians for all manufactures of vehicles on call for careful removal of parts such as headlights, trims, and handles. This is never done on a DIY basis, and always by someone who has the experience.
