If you purchase a used vehicle in Toronto, chances are it has had some form of paint protection on it. Weather it be ceramic coating, or paint protection film. Often times, paint protection film installed may either be substandard in terms of coverage, poorly prepared (chips under the film), low quality (yellowing), or simply near the end of its life cycle. In this section, we will go over the aspects of paint protection film removal at Toronto Buffing.
This Porsche 911 came to us with old, dated, peeling, paint protection. This type of coverage may have been the best available, but years later, it is not only at the end of its life cycle, but lacking coverage. It can be noted that this type of partial PPF is a recipe for disaster, as it caused rocks to bounce off the film, and further damage the unprotected portions of the film.
After carefully removing the paint protection film from the vehicle, we carefully touched up the dozens of stone chips. We then proceeded with a 3-stage paint correction. Naturally, when protection is removed, it should be reapplied, so we went forward with our standard Full Front End PPF Package. The transformation is incredible, and all without any repainting.
The most common reason we remove PPF is because it is old, worn, or damaged. It is important to remember that paint protection film is a replaceable protection item, and was never intended to be used forever.
Commonly, we often remove some substandard PPF installations do to exposed edges, poor coverage, misalignments, and defects under the film. It is important to understand that humans perform ppf installations, and mistakes can happen. More often than not, clients normally inherit a poor ppf install when purchasing a used vehicle.
Removal of off shore, yellow, or darkened PPF is another popular reason we remove film at our shop. Currently, the market is flooded with gray market PPF installers, offering services for a fraction of the price. The catch is, the film last a fraction of the time. When this type of film has to be removed, it is a very difficult, and labour intensive task.
Paint protection film is removed with heat, normally by steamer of hot water, and strategically pulling the film off of the paint. It is tedious, and labour intensive as the glue forms a tough bond to the paint, and that glue continuously sticks to the technicians hands during removal. With lower quality films, sometimes all the adhesive remains on the panel, requiring specialized solvents and manual techniques to clean this glue. In some cases, with higher quality films, removal is a breeze and done in a short period of time. Paint protection film removal can be one of the most difficult jobs in the automotive protection world.
Paint protection film removal is not without risk. In some cases, people install paint protection film over low quality paint jobs. The end result can be that the paint comes off with the paint protection film. No amount of heat, steam, or technique can prevent this, because the foundation bond between the paint and the metal is very poor. This is something no shop can control, and ultimately, no shop can be held liable for. However at Toronto Buffing, we have various techniques to assess panels for red flags of sub standard paint jobs, and create contingencies in the event of paint peeling. If paint protection film was installed on a quality, or original paint job, then there is nothing to fear.
